Eat Me - Shameless Family Promotion

The food and philosophy of Kenny Shopsin

Arctic

If you’ve ever clicked on the links at the bottom of the sidebar on the left, you’ve probably realized that a) my last name is Shopsin, and b) my family owns a restaurant in New York City called, you guessed it, Shopsin’s. The restaurant has been a fixture in my life since the day I was born. Literally. I’ve lived in a number of apartments and houses, but the restaurant (now in it’s third location) has always been the place I called home.

Our restaurant is very hard to explain, though that doesn’t keep people from trying. Google it and I’m sure you’ll find a ton of people that love it, hate it, are disgusted by it, are shocked and awed by it, or just plain like eating there. One thing I think people will agree on is that the menu is huge, incredibly varied and incredibly weird. The two things I’ve seen people ordering the most of lately are Macaroni and Cheese Pancakes, which sound weird, but are truly awesome, and the Gallant sandwich (warm turkey, bacon, avocado, cranberry mayo, ciabatta) which almost sounds normal and again, is quite delicious.

You can look at the full menu here (pdf). A warning: When I was still living at home, before going off to college and my stay on the west coast, I used to design the menu for my dad. My designs were not particularly inspired, but they were relatively readable and consistent. When I left for college I gave my dad a copy of Quark Express and a brief tutorial on how to use it. And use it he did. I haven’t studied Claude Shannon’s work on information theory as much as I’d have liked, but I’m pretty sure his menu design is approaching some sort of maximal information density limit.

Anyway, the reason for this post is that my father recently released a cookbook/philosophical tract/memoir called “Eat Me: The Food and Philosophy of Kenny Shopsin”. I’m obviously quite biased, but I think it is the most entertaining cookbook I’ve ever read. It’s a combination cook book and memoir, with about 100 recipes and a bunch of essays detailing my father’s approach to food, cooking, family, the restaurant business, and much more. Not to mention a picture of me bathing in a sink. You can read it like a cookbook, just going to the recipes that interest you, but I think most people will just end up reading it cover to cover like a normal book.

The book is designed by my sister Tamara and the photographs were taken by her husband Jason.

Once my scanner gets here and I get everything set up I’m going to post a couple of excerpts on the site, but really, why wait? You should just buy a copy

Yemen arrests 30 after U.S. embassy attack (Reuters)

Thursday, 18. September 2008 von ustommymc

SANAA (Reuters) - Yemeni authorities have arrested 30 people suspected of belonging to al Qaeda following an attack on the heavily fortified U.S. embassy in Sanaa, a security source said on Thursday.

Two suicide car bombs set off a series of explosions outside the embassy compound on Wednesday, killing 16 people including six attackers. The dead were all Yemeni apart from an Indian woman who was walking past.

"The security authorities want to investigate whether the suspects are linked to Wednesday's attack," the security source said.

A Yemeni security source said Washington would send investigators to Yemen to help the authorities.

Yemeni security sources said the attackers were disguised in military uniforms and had made their cars look like those driven by Yemen's security forces.

The gunmen in the car opened fire on embassy guards after they refused to open the metal outer gates of the compound. They had planned to use their disguises to get inside the compound to the main embassy building which is some distance from the gate.

The U.S. State Department said on Wednesday the bombings bore "all the hallmarks" of an al Qaeda attack but the United States had not yet concluded who was to blame.

A group calling itself Islamic Jihad in Yemen, which is unrelated to the Palestinian group with a similar name, claimed responsibility.

It threatened attacks on other embassies, including those of Britain, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, unless Yemen freed several jailed members.

"We will carry out the rest of the series of attacks on the other embassies that were declared previously, until our demands are met by the Yemeni government," the group said on Wednesday.

Yemeni security sources said special counterterrorism forces had been put in charge of defending the U.S. embassy.

Video: Harriet and Amy’s Spring 2009 Trend Report

It’s time for Harriet Mays Powell and Amy Larocca to weigh in on the biggest trends from the spring 2009 runways. The color palate was mostly beige or “makeup colors,” as Harriet says. Amy notes, “It wasn’t New York’s most exciting Fashion Week,” but Marc Jacobs delivered a “mind-blowingly good” show. And you won’t be able to escape the droopy-crotched harem pant. Watch the video and allow the experts to explain how to pull off the trends.

Hotline After Dark — No Biz Like Show Biz

With the AIG bailout announcement, the economy continued to the big topic on TV. There was also a lot of reaction to statements made by two John McCain advisers.

“Countdown” aired NBC’s Mitchell’s conversation with McCain Victory chair Carly Fiorina.

Mitchell: “Can I just ask you about an interview, I believe you did this today on KTRS Radio, the ‘McGraw-Hill Show,’ and you were asked whether Sarah Palin has the experience to run a major company like Hewlett-Packard which you did and you said, ‘No, I don’t. But you know what? That’s not what she’s running for.’”

Fiorina: “Well, I don’t think John McCain could run a major corporation. I don’t think Barack Obama could run a major corporation. I don’t think Joe Biden could run a major corporation. But on the other hand, a major corporation is not the same as being the president or the vice president of the United States. It is a fallacy to suggest that the country is like a company” (MSNBC, 9/16).

CNN’s J. King: “They have not run a major corporation but what is the United States government? It is the biggest business, if you will. It requires executive decisions like that. … Yes, she said Obama and Biden aren’t qualified either. But at a time they are trying to make this compelling economic argument to seize control of the biggest issue before the American people, to have … a senior economic advisor — although she volunteers for the campaign — say that you’re not qualified has them furious. And she was told to cancel some other interviews she had scheduled today, and I’m told you won’t see much of Carly Fiorina on TV, at least for a while, because of their disappointment on this. … This was another miscommunication from the McCain campaign at a pivotal time” (”AC 360,” 9/16).Mitt Romney: “Having been a governor and the CEO of a state, I know it’s real tough to run a state effectively and I know it’s real tough also to be a CEO. Both are very tough jobs. And I believe that John McCain, with 25 years of experience in the Senate, and Sarah Palin actually having run a city and run a state, they have the experience it takes to run the government and they have the experience it takes to run a company. I’d be happy to hire them” (”Hardball,” MSNBC, 9/16).

More after the jump, including Obama on the economy and a one-on-one with Todd Palin.

Perataâs Candid Comments on the California Budget

Perata-on-floor-091508.gif

By Frank D. Russo

Yesterday evening, during one of the many recesses on the Senate Floor, Democratic Senator and President pro Tem Don Perata spoke to a group of reporters and answered questions. Here is a bit of what he had to say:

Q. Who are the winners?

AIG subsidiary completes Wuba AG takeover - MarketWatch

American International Group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Through three subsidiaries plus its direct ownership, AIG actually owns 19.8 percent. Subsidiary Holdings: AIG American General Life Companies. AIG Annuity

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — A subsidiary of American International Group Inc. subsidiaries from entities associated with J.C. Flowers & Co., said AIG Friday.

AIG Employee Benefit Solutions
… 2002 - 2008 American International Group, Inc. All rights Insurance and financial services provided by subsidiaries of American International Group, Inc.

A. The Republicans are winners. They have a nice set of bills that they were able to get by holding us over a barrel. And I think the winners, if there are anyâ”we havenât cut education, we didnât cut higher education, and we restored most of the really draconian cuts to health and human services. But there is nothing I am proud of and I think the state has moved one step closer to fiscal disaster. They stock market dropped 500 points and if people canât figure out whatâs going on, itâs too damn bad.

But this is the best we could do. At 77 days out, Iâve had it. The people that I came up here to represent are being held hostage. Thatâs got to stop.

It basically is not more money. Itâs just one time money. So all this money wonât be available next year to do this very same thing. Ironically, without a tax next year, theyâre going to have to borrow still more and more money to sustain California government.

Q. Will we be worse off next year?

A. Oh yeah. You can bet your life, yes. One of the things in this budget requires us to have voter approval of a so-called securitization of the lottery. Thereâs not five human beings who know what that means.

Basically, its borrowing against the lottery. And we have to borrow $5 billion for next yearâs budget or weâre $5 billion in the hole starting out. So, we donât even know when itâs going to go on the ballot. If it goes on the ballot in the special election, Iâm doubtful that thereâs going to be a lot of people that will support it. And if education doesnât support it, it wonât pass at all. So thisis really a high risk budget.

The governor, if he could, would have done it differently. Iâm sure he would have. But he had as little success with the people in his partyâ”and Iâm not in his party.

Q. Are we gambling with the taxpayers?

A. I donât know if weâre gambling with the taxpayers. We have an atrocious system here in California. And weâre simply taking advantage of some of the loopholes in the atrociousness. It is an awful way to conduct state business and thereâs absolutely no will to reform the budget. None. The Governorâs got a little bit going for him with his, butâ”true reform had nothing to do with this budget this year. I just think theyâre people here who want to bring it downâ”thatâs their dedicated mission.

Q. Bring what down?

A. The government . They want to grind it to a halt.

NY allows AIG to borrow from subsidiaries
American International Group Inc. AIG Stay of Execution: Holding Company Can Access $20 Billion of Subsidiary Capital

Q. Who?

A. Republicans. Iâm not saying all. But there are some who just feel that way about government. They have a legitimate point of view and in California, the minority has a very big say at times like this. Theyâre not doing anything that theyâre not allowed to do. They have just figured out that there is a time to take advantage of that. They drove a very hard bargain. Most of us thought that the Republicans would support a Republican governor, and they didnât.

Q. Could you have gotten this earlier?

A. No. No. Iâd still be hanging out if there werenât people in my district that are destitute.Iâd have the stomach for being here a lot longer , but as Iâve said, Iâve heard too many peopleâ”when I go back to Oakland, I want to wear a bag over my head so people donât know Iâm in town. Because they want to know, why arenât you up there working. Real people are getting hurt, really, really badly. So now at least their checks will be written and the programs people depend upon. You know, we werenât hurting real high income people who are driving Lexusâ, but we were sure kicking the hell out of people in my district.
