NEW DELHI, India (CNN) — The only surviving suspect in last month’s attacks in Mumbai has written a letter to the Pakistan High Commission, or embassy, seeking legal aid, CNN’s sister network in India reported Saturday, quoting a Mumbai police official.

Whitney High took the fast track to football success, and the Wildcats can thank speedy running back Zack Graves for the acceleration

The answer to the question may be Zack Graves. Twenty-five years from now when countless players have moved through the Whitney High School football program, some may consider Graves the Wildcats’ first standout, the player who helped put them on the local football map.

Remove Graves from the equation, and Whitney might resemble every other young program, enduring hard knocks in a quest to become a force.

Instead, the Wildcats have developed faster than the northwest Rocklin area in which they reside. The Wildcats (12-0) will face Placer (8-4) in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV championship game Friday night at Folsom High School, and Graves has been instrumental in helping his team return there.

“I don’t think we would be as strong of a team without Zack,” Wildcats senior offensive lineman Mike Hathorn said. “He does everything. He runs the ball, catches it and put points on the board for us. He means a lot.”

Colfax coach Tony Martello agreed.

“I don’t know if we’ve had a running back in our (Pioneer Valley) league who has carried the load and put his team on his back like that kid,” he said. “Without him, I don’t think Whitney would be undefeated.”

Graves leads section rushers with 2,481 yards (on 282 carries) and points (250). Six times he has racked up 200 yards or more, including his last three games.

What’s more compelling is Graves is not your prototype running back. Though only 5-foot-9 and 163 pounds, he has found a way to get the job done.

“Yeah, he is small,” offensive lineman Andrey Feytser said. “But Zack is strong.”

Another observer summed up Graves in two words.

“Versatility and durability is Zack,” Wildcats coach Mike Gimenez said. “Zack is also tough. Basically, he had a bull’s-eye on his chest all season.

“Every team we faced put one or two extra guys on the line of scrimmage to stop him. Still, he found a way to get the ball downfield. He has been really fun to watch.”

Graves’ 77-yard touchdown run in a 48-0 win over Idaho Falls in Week 1 showcased his intangibles. He took a pitch to the right side, bounced off two defenders and jetted away.

“After I saw the run, I said, ‘That’s Zack Graves doing his thing,’ ” Feytser said.

Graves, however, is not boastful. He is quick to credit his teammates, especially the offensive line, for his success.

“The key is the guys up front,” he said. “They provide me with the holes to run through. That’s who deserves the credit.”

He is also a perfectionist.

“Very hard on himself,” Hathorn said. “He’ll get in a funk sometimes when he doesn’t do something right. But that’s good because he comes back and tries harder.”

Gimenez didn’t know what type of players he was getting when he was named Whitney’s first football coach three years ago. Graves was one of the gems, but he took time to shine. Following a year on the freshman team, a nasty hip injury slowed him during his first varsity season as a sophomore in 2006.

But things changed in 2007. Graves rushed for 1,435 yards on 224 carries and scored 16 touchdowns. His performance helped the Wildcats beat established programs such as Colfax and Bear River and advance to the Division IV section title game. The Wildcats lost to Oakdale 34-27.

Now, they are focused on Placer, which has gained momentum after entering the playoffs through a court order overturning a section forfeiture ruling.

The Wildcats beat their PVL rival 34-12 Nov. 14 (Graves had 215 rushing yards on 35 carries). They expect a tougher game in the rematch, but Graves said his team is ready.

“Losing to Oakdale last year is our team’s motivation for this season,” he said. “We want that championship. We will do what it takes to win.”

Don’t be surprised if Graves leads the way.
