New York Times Book Review’ Blog Praises FIRE Co-founder Harvey Silverglate’s Parody Article
Barry Gewen, an editor for The New York Times Book Review, posted an interesting entry today on the Book Review’s “Paper Cuts” blog commenting on FIRE Co-founder Harvey Silverglate’s recent “Parody Flunks Out” column for The Boston Phoenix. Harvey is quoted in the blog as saying that this particular column has received more attention than any of his others, a trend continued by Gewen’s entry. (We here at FIRE have certainly noticed the abundant interest.)
Kelly defends decision to leave
Of Harvey, Gewen writes:
I’ve known him for many years, and consider him as close to a free-speech absolutist —in the worthy tradition of former Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black—as anyone currently engaged in the never-ending battle against censorship. One doesn’t have to agree with every position Silverglate takes - I doubt he expects that. But it’s good for the culture and the country to have him out there, arguing, badgering, publicizing, provoking.
Discussing Harvey’s comparison of the state of parody on college campuses to society at large, Gewen gives an approving nod towards the work that FIRE does on behalf of student and faculty rights, and argues that while “many of us think of censorship issues as distant annoyances… several of the fiercest and most important free-speech controversies are in fact taking place much closer to home.”
Pointing out that on many campuses, speech has been restricted—something that Torch readers already know—Gewen says that the effect of campus speech restrictions is that “the heavy hand of the censor is around people’s throats.” Calling the situation Harvey describes at Harvard “mind-boggling,” Gewen concludes that Harvey’s warning (”In Cambridge, one may not safely say in Harvard Yard what is constitutionally protected in Harvard Square,”) should “haunt anyone who cares about the health of our society.”
We at FIRE can only hope that more people, especially those at FIRE’s Red Alert schools, will recognize this fact before that “heavy hand” reaches out for them too.

National electoral map: Drift from McCain toward Obama persists
As the Nov. 4 general election days nears — now just six weeks away, which seems like 18 if you’re out there campaigning — the number of state polls increase. They’re the basis for the National Electoral Map from Karl Rove & Co., that The Ticket publishes regularly.
Polls in recent days continue to show a slight drift toward Barack Obama — old Republican-reliable Indiana with its 11 electoral votes has slipped from the John McCain column into toss-up since the last map.
Colorado’s nine electoral votes went from toss-up into the Obama column while Minnesota’s 10 votes went from Obama to toss-up.
McCain continues to hold the slimmest of national leads over Obama, with 216 electoral votes to Obama’s 215, and 107 in the toss-up category. But, Rove speculates, “If the movement toward Obama in national polls continues to percolate down to the states, we could see an Obama lead later this week.”
The study’s methodology is explained on the jump, which also contains a chart showing each week’s electoral vote movements since March. Click on the Read more line to get there.
–Andrew Malcolm

methodology
For each state, the map uses the average of all public telephone polls (internet polls are not included in the average) taken within 14 days of the most recent poll available in each state.
For example, if the most recent poll in Montana was taken on July 1, the average includes all polls conducted between July 1 and July 15.
States within a three-point lead for McCain or Obama are classified as toss-ups; states outside the three-point lead are allocated to the respective candidate.
There is no polling data available for the District of Columbia, but its three electoral votes are allocated to Obama.

You can lead a politician to water
i think the comment of show a clean pair of heels fletcher on his market forces clog in favour of the guardian says it all: “traders have no idea which way to turn today. one minute shares are soaring, the next they are slumping”.that grade of chimes with the animadversion i picked up yesterday after crawling out of the pit and switching on the radio: “nobody seems to know what they are doing”.the terrible truth dawning is that this is doubtlessly true. elsewhere iain dale has a pop at dib-lem leader nab cleg for not knowing what the single retirement pension was, hazarding a dare say at £30 when the true rate is £90.70.the obvious question to ask is, “can politicians really be that ignorant?”, to which the correlate with talk back to a be accountable is as likely as not “yes”. in fact, there is no “probably” about it. and that was an easy question. when it comes to the more complicated issues, predilection the energy crisis or the increasing encroachment of the eu in the administration of our government, most politicians do not have a clue. they are not even on holiday inception base. they extraordinarily are that ignorant.part of the problem here as we have observed before is that they do not converse about these issues. there is no political cogitation about energy, nor the eu nor on sensitive issues like immigration. and if you don’t discuss these things, you don’t learn and your understanding does not develop.worst of all, when programme issues are not discussed, phenomenal levels of stupidity and crass decisions like this are not picked up. then, in the fullness of often, when the consequences turn apparent, everyone is surprised and dismayed that they could have happened and nobody did anything about them.that is the message of the moment. all sorts of things are happening now which are the result of decisions enchanted (or not taken) in the past, unremarked or not given the scrutiny they merit. it is hands down now being tactical after the event, but the problem is that not enough people were wise before the event or they were not being heard.so it is that, as we are assailed with the bad report of the epoch, tomorrow’s crises are already in the making, all because no one seems to know what they are doing or more to the point they are avoiding the discussion and letting ignorance be their guide. the real mother of all problems though, is that oft misquoted saw: “you can lead a ward-heeler to invalid, but you cannot make him think”.comment sequence

Starting Rookie QB’s

© saquan stimpson/monstershaq2000the baltimore ravens have decided that troy smith (pictured) is still too sick, and kyle boller is too injured, so they will start rookie joe flacco at quarterback week 1 in their game against the cincinnati bengals. starting a rookie in week 1 of the season at any position is a speculate, and that is remarkably true in the interest of quarterbacks. let’s take a look and see how some other ancient-round qb’s fared in their first game of their rookie year. drew brees: playing for the san diego chargers in 2001, brees took to the players for the only time again in week 8. he wasn’t vicious, throwing 27 times and completing 15 for 221 yards and entire td. alas, his crew was taken down by the chiefs, 25-20. david carr: like flacco, carr was thrown out in week 1 of his rookie season. the texans won that game, 19-10 over dallas, and carr went 10 of 22 for 145 yards, two td’s, and one int. joey harrington: coincidentally, harrington will be flacco’s backup in this game. harrington was also thrown into the fire week 1 of his rookie season in 2001, and it didn’t go so well, as he completed 4 of 11 passes for 41 yards, as miami blew revealed the lions, 49-21. rex grossman: in week 15 during the 2003 contest, grossman went 13 for 30 object of 157 yards in a bears 13-10 win over the vikings. grossman didn’t throw any td’s, but shockingly, he did not throw any int’s either. eli manning: in a 2004 week 1 loss to the eagles, manning saw some playing time and went 3 of 9 for 66 yards and was sacked once. ben roethlisberger: also in 2004, big ben suited up week 2, and in a 30-13 steelers loss to baltimore, roethlisberger was 12 of 20 respecting 176 yards, 2 td’s, and 2 int’s. so it’s not all doom and gloom for some of our selected examples, and it shouldn’t be for flacco, either. demonstrably, he can have some success, though if past indicators are examples of how things play not on in the future, the pompously righty probably won’t be completing 50% of his passes. see full article. related entries:
