While Dark Knight Rules, Batman Rumors Rise

Minors spoilers ahead for those who didn’t brave the bat lines this bat weekend. The Dark Knight is still too hot to touch in theaters, but rumors are already flourishing as to what the next Batman film will offer.

Confidence motion

Supposition has been winging its way around movie fandom for weeks leading up to the film’s premiere. Some reports were packed with spoilers generated by the films’ stars themselves. Other stories ended up with their details a little off when predicting what Dark Knight and its would-be succeeding film would include.

We know the following for sure: The major cast members for Dark Knight are signed for a third film, including Christian Bale, should Christopher Nolan decide to make the movie. The stage is set for that third go around in Dark Knight’s wake, but Nolan is iffy on whether he wants to return to Gotham for a third visit. Bale’s participation in any additional Batman is reportedly based on Nolan’s participation.

Nolan also refused to discuss whether he’d recast The Joker for a third film following Heath Ledger’s death. Names like Daniel Day Lewis pop up now and again, but even that genius would face an uphill climb matching Ledger’s brilliant final performance.

With Joker sidelined out of respect, and Two Face sidelined by apparent extinction, most reports have The Riddler stepping forward cialis as the next challenger from Batman’s rogues’ gallery. But the near-epic scope of The Dark Knight makes the thought of a single villain-driven plot seem like a possible letdown.

“Dr. Horrible’s Singalong Blog” is a web-based musical about a hapless super-villain wannabe with a crush on the pretty girl at the laundromat. It’s the kind of thing that only Joss Whedon could make work, and if the first episode is any indication, he’s made it work fantastically. There are no deep thoughts present, this is purely pleasant fluff, but it’s really good fluff. It’s Whedon fluff.

The first episode, weighing in at a scant 15 minutes, introduces Neil Patrick Harris’ Dr. Horrible; his roommate Mr. Moist (a villain with the dubiously useful power of being able to make things… moist); Penny, the pretty girl at the laundromat; and Captain Hammer, the doctor’s arch-nemesis. I’ve always thought that Nathan Fillion looked a bit like a comic book hero, and his portrayal of the egotistical Captain Hammer is pitch perfect. Fillion makes a great foil for Harris, who is a twitchy, nervous sort of anti-hero. Dr. Horrible’s efforts to get into the Evil League of Evil and win the heart of Penny don’t start off too well, but I’m sure that the hero (or really, the villain) will triumph in the end.

There aren’t really any big, show-stopping musical numbers; but the singing is well done and the lyrics are very funny. The final number, sung by Penny, Captain Hammer and Doctor Horrible, is particularly charming. Of course, there’s plenty of riffing on super-villain and super-hero clichés, including freeze-rays and a really good villainous laugh. The characters are pretty thin, but there’s a surprising amount of heart for such an absurd premise. It’s hard not to empathize with geeky, dopey Dr. Horrible, and root against the heroically self-obsessed Captain Hammer. Penny (Felicia Day) didn’t have much to do other than look pretty and helpless, but she managed that fetchingly. It’s more fun than you’d expect from anyone but Joss Whedon. From Joss, it’s just another day at the office.

Earlier today when I tried to watch the video, it was down due to what I can only assume was massive demand. As of now the first episode is the #2 television download on iTunes and the remaining episodes (released on July 17th and 19th) will no doubt see the same kind of demand. The episodes will only be available for free for a limited time, so get ‘em while they last.

Those rumors of collaborations between OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder and David Cook and David Archuleta? Not gonna happen. Tedder recently told ABC News Radio that the rumors are running rampant, but they’re just not true:

“No, there are all these rumors swirling about me, and, us and American Idols. And it even says on Wikipedia that I’m working with David Cook and Archuleta. I have not worked with either of them, and I don’t have either of them on the schedule.”

The band OneRepublic released “Apologize”, one of this year’s huge hits. Tedder co-wrote the Leona Lewis mega-hit “Bleeding Love” with Jesse McCartney (who will soon go out on tour with Jordin Sparks–ahh the connections!). He also collaborated with Blake Lewis on several cuts from his debut album Audio Day Dream, including the ill-fated single, “Break Anotha”.

All Star Game Wish List

The All Star Game is just two days away, and I’m thrilled that it’s being played in Yankee Stadium. An ASG at the Stadium is something I’ve always wanted to see, and here are some other things I’d like to see at this Yankee Stadium All Star Game:1. A Bobby Murcer tribute. I think this is a given. He passed away just three days before the ASG, and considering it’s being played at the place he called home for so long, it’d be blasphemous if they don’t give him some sort of tribute.2. A shower of boos for every Red Sox player, especially Jason Varitek. I’m positive the hometown crowd will not give these guys a warm welocme, but Jason Varitek deserves the most resounding jeers of all. He does not deserve to be anywhere near the ASG, and I hope he’d be booed no matter where the game was played.3. A home plate collision featuring AL catcher Dioner Navarro. I’d love to see Team Sunshine skipper Joe Maddon whine and moan about this latest “attempted murder.” If only Akinori Iwamura was playing second so Maddon could complain that the NLers are morally corrupt psychopaths picking on the little guy.4. A dumbass move by Manny Ramirez, resulting in dangerous objects flying forth from the bleachers. In other words, Manny being pummeled.5. Ryan Braun and Josh Hamilton leading the way in the home run derby. My two favorite non-Yankees (and members of my first-place fantasy squad) should get their times to shine at Yankee Stadium. I don’t want them to steal the show during the actual game however, because of wish number 6:6. Derek Jeter winning the ASG MVP for the second time. I’d be happy with any Yankee winning the award, but it’d be extra excellent if the Captain were to win it.7. Jason Giambi. I still haven’t heard of a replacement for David Ortiz on the team, and Giambi fits the bill perfectly. He plays the same position (first base/DH), he’s having a very good year, and oh yeah, he’s a Yankee.8. Last but not least, a win for the American League. Yanks are gonna need that home-field advantage en route to number 27.
