Streaming large content with WCF and deferred execution

I will use this post to discuss an scenario that you may run into while working with WCF, a service that returns a lot of objects (Or large data) to the client applications. This scenario is not about transferring files, that is a completely different story, and I already discussed it some time ago in another post.

The scalability of the service’s host may be affected if the service is not well designed or configured. WCF will use large memory buffers to keep the complete message before it start sending that message through the wire.

Using data contracts or XML serializable classes in this scenario does not scale well because the complete object graph has to be loaded in memory before the corresponding serializer (Data Contract serializer or Xml Serializer) transform it into an stream of bytes.

In addition, if the service throttling settings are not configured carefully for that service, a large number of requests will practically consume all the available resources (If that happens, the server will stop processing additional requests and you may run into a OutOfMemory exception as well). For more information about Service Throttling, I recommend this Kenny Wolf’s post.

Before getting into the streaming solution, which looks very complex at first glance, you should consider refactoring your service’s API to support data paging. If you use paging, the design of the final service will be simpler and you should not have any of the mentioned problems. What’s more, streaming does not work well with message security, the default behavior for WCF is to buffer all messages when message security is set for the channel. In order to combine message security with streaming you should use the Chunking Channel.

The client application will have to call that method as many times as it needs to retrieve all the customers. The service should have a limit in the number of customers it can return per call, otherwise, we will have the same problems if the client application asks for a large number of customers.

Deferred execution is a cool feature introduced in .NET 2.0 for enumerations. Basically the enumeration does not happen until some calling code wants to examine the enumeration.

Let’s discuss now how deferred execution can be achieved in WCF with the help of the streaming model.

what an interesting okay awkward. we did get to hear some of the background on these animals and some of the stories are really sad. it is great that there are places like this.we arrived back home just in front the thunderstorms and come down in buckets off and on. it has cooled down very much a bit but we were able to be enduring a stinting fire between the storms.

Pay-as-you-throw gets trashed

The Finance Committee held its first round of budget discussions last Tuesday, bringing new scrutiny to a proposed “pay-as-you-throw” trash fee that would force residents to dispose of all household garbage in city trash bags costing $2 each. 

Ward 3 Councilor Paul DiPietro called the program a “last resort,” and questioned the cost and feasibility of implementing such a program. He also said he doubts whether it could raise enough funds to balance the budget.

Council President Gary Christensen was more direct in his opposition to the program, saying he would prefer to find other options for revenue.

“I cannot support the trash fee,” he said.

Ward 2 Councilor Paul Condon also voiced hesitation about implementing a trash fee, but said the alternative cuts necessary to keep the budget in check would be equally unappealing.

Condon added that, although the fiscal 2009 budget will be difficult to balance, he expects next year’s would be “even worse,” and that the city will have to begin preparing now.

Ward 6 Councilor Neil Kinnon said he heard lots of opposition to the trash fee among many of his constituents this week. Kinnon said many residents cite costs and the ability to enforce the program as reasons for being against it.

Kinnon also said a large percentage of Malden residents are renters, and he predicted there would be widespread “irresponsibility” among landlords who do not live in Malden and could make the program difficult to enforce.

He said many residents have told him they would be “disappointed” if the city does not make an effort to restructure the budget and make it leaner.

“The last thing you want to do is raise taxes,” he said, calling the trash fee tantamount to a property tax hike.

Although the meeting this week was designed to get the committee’s initial reaction to Mayor Richard Howard’s proposal, some alternative options to a pay-as-you-throw system were discussed.

The paramount alternative discussed would be healthcare savings derived from buying out city employees from the city’s health insurance plan.

City Controller Domenic Fermano and City Treasurer-Collector Frank Vacca both said workers would opt out if they were receiving health insurance through other means, including being covered by a spouse’s health plan.

Also, due to recent changes in Massachusetts’ law requiring residents to have health insurance, the city would need documentation proving workers’ alternate sources of coverage.

Condon called it a “win-win” situation, asking Fermano and Vacca to bring the issue to Howard in order to facilitate a mailing to gauge the level of interest in a possible buyout.

Fermano also said the budget includes no layoffs. In the past, he said, the city has used some money from the rainy day fund to avoid loss of personnel.

“We don’t have that luxury today,” he said.

While the budget does not currently lay off any city personnel, any currently vacant positions will remain unfilled under the fiscal 2009 allocation.

DiPietro proposed saving more money in the budget by changing City Hall hours, by extending them Monday through Thursday and closing the building completely on Fridays to conserve utility and operating costs one day per week.

“The economy is not going to change,” said Finance Committee Chairman Greg Lucey. “Anything you implement this year [will] benefit next year.”

The Finance Committee is set to meet next week with representatives from the library and city engineer’s office as well as the police, fire and school departments.

Lucey said the brainstorming sessions will continue with other departments, with the goal of having a proposal ready for the full City Council on June 17.
