Debating in December

On the day of the biggest UFC card of the year, it’s time for some debate with MMA author Kelly Crigger.

All the hoopla surrounding Mike Brown’s knockout of Urijah Faber is premature.

Kelly Crigger: This is one of those painful moments when a journalist has to ignore his relationships and face facts. Brown is a good dude, someone I’ve hung out with, and I was happy to see him get a moment in the sun. But the agonizing and inescapable fact is that Faber didn’t take the fight with him seriously, and a rematch will probably be a different story. Brown is legit and can clean out the remainder of the featherweight division in the WEC, so his current role as the marshal of the parade of exultation is earned. But I don’t think Faber took Brown seriously, and now that he’s lost his belt and has to climb a short ladder back up to a title shot, he’ll be more focused and determined than ever. That’s a scary thought. Faber is like a democracy — the world should beware of him when he’s mad. I don’t want to take anything away from Brown, who has the tools to remain champion and earned his belt with wins over Yves Edwards, Jeff Curran, Mark Hominick, and a very tough Renato Tavares before beating Faber. But Faber won’t treat a rematch the same way and will come out with guns blazing. That will be the true test of Mike Thomas Brown and, friends on Facebook or not, I give him a 50-50 chance of winning that fight.

Mark Chalifoux: Kelly, you may want to go check on Mike Brown’s name to see if it’s OK because you dropped it pretty hard. Your best friend really is a great fighter, but Faber is in a class of his own at that weight, and I think the odds are even less in his favor. Faber is going to be a force, again, but should be even tougher after the loss. Look at Georges St. Pierre and his loss to Matt Serra. Obviously, Brown is no Serra, but GSP has been very strong since that loss and he’s picked his game up another level, which is why he’s been controlling the welterweight scene.

Mike Swick is poised to make a run at St. Pierre.

Kelly Crigger: True. I wasn’t a fan of Swick moving down to 170 pounds and, in fact, I said it was a huge mistake when he danced around Josh Burkman in his first welterweight fight. But after defeating Marcus Davis, I think Swick is on the verge of a run at the title. Of course, now comes the hard part. To get a shot at GSP, he still has to beat a high-profile guy, like Matt Hughes (who is still around), Thiago Alves, or Diego Sanchez. If UFC brings Jake Shields into the organization, he could provide a real test for Swick, who hasn’t been challenged by a true grappler at 170 pounds yet. The other “Oh, crap!” factor here is his own camp. Swick trains with Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch, both of whom have had their shot at St. Pierre and lost, but still remain among the top 10 welterweights in the UFC. Given Dana White’s disdain for the AKA camp lately, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Swick facing one of these two fighters to earn his title shot. The question is, can he put aside his friendship with them to advance his career goals?

Mark Chalifoux: Wrong. Swick is a very talented fighter, but there’s just too much talent at the top at 170. He could fight Matt Hughes, although that’s not going to get him a title shot. I know UFC is pushing hard for a Swick vs. Alves fight while Alves waits around for his title shot. It would make sense for Thiago to take that fight just to make some cash in the interim, and he can do this because Swick won’t be able to beat him. Alves is the best challenger to St. Pierre at this weight level (B.J. Penn is still a lightweight) and has the more complete game at this point. Alves taking this fight is the equivalent of a grade-school kid picking up a paper route to help buy a new bike — an easy way to make some quick cash. Can Swick make a run at GSP? Sure. He’s not doing it now, unless this “run” is a multi-year process, in which case, I’d argue every welterweight is “making a run” at St. Pierre.

Is Carlos Newton’s comeback going to end in a Rocky-style run at the top or will he crash and burn?

Kelly Crigger: That’s a simple question — crash and burn. MMA has bypassed Carlos Newton. The once impressive Canuck has only won once in his last seven fights going back to 2004, and he simply hasn’t evolved with the sport. The former UFC welterweight champion’s bid to return to MMA competition is ill-advised at best. The bigger question here is why do guys like Newton, Kazushi Sakuraba, Ken Shamrock, and Royce Gracie think they can come back to the game that they once dominated and expect it to be …

A North State Holiday

Hello and welcome to my blog! This is my first posting, and given the timing of it, I thought it appropriate to write about living in the North State during the holiday season. I have recently had a chance to report on a number of different holiday events from the Downtown Chico Business Association’s Christmas Preview to Orland’s Avenue of Lights to the first snow of the season in Paradise and everything in between!

I was so impressed by the turnout at the Christmas Preview. Despite the chilly weather, there were so many families and groups of friends walking up and down Broadway and Main. Santa arrived on a horse-drawn carriage, the sound of Christmas karaoke filled the air, and all of the businesses got in the spirit by decorating and serving up treats. It was a very nice night.

The Avenue of Lights was also a sight to see! Millions of lights lined the one mile route at the Glenn County Fairgrounds. You could tell the organizers put a lot of care into creating the display. All the drivers who went through on opening night seemed delighted with what they saw!

Over in Paradise, I had the opportunity to run around in the first snow of the season. There is something magical about those flakes falling from the sky. And Paradise is such a picturesque place, the whole town looks like it belongs on a postcard!

I have to say that all of the events and stories I’ve done are fun and festive, but the one thing that stands out to me the most is the people who attend them and ultimately, help me tell the story. I can’t tell you how many smiling faces greet me everywhere I go. There’s always someone offering to hold the door, carry the camera or offer up a warm cup of hot chocolate. The hospitality up here is unmatched anywhere else, and that is my most favorite thing about living here. I come from the Bay Area where it’s “bright lights and big city” all the time. As much as I love my hometown, the fast pace of life there often gets in the way of enjoying life’s special moments. Now that I live and work in the North State, it feels nice to live in a community that takes the time to get to know its neighbors and slows down a little to enjoy this magical time of year. Thank you for making me feel so welcome here. I look forward to many more holiday-inspired stories this season, and I hope you will get in the spirit right along with me!

Cyber War Games Confirm Flaws in US Security

cyber_security_dec_08.jpg

after participating in a two day cyber war simulation mould week, government and industry officials said that the united states is ill-equipped to cope with a major attack against computer networks reuters reports.

The cyber war game brought together 230 representatives of government agencies, private companies and other groups, and revealed failings in leadership, planning, and communications.

Sponsor

Mark Gerencser, vice president of Booz Allen Hamilton, the consulting service which ran the simulation said: “There isn’t a response or a game plan; there isn’t really anybody in charge.”

The threats are serious. Earlier this year, federal prosecutors charged 11 people with stealing more than 41 million credit and debit card numbers, cracking what appeared to be the largest hacking and identity theft network ever exposed.

Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, US Representative James Langevin said that a successful attack could lead to failure of banking or national electrical systems.

“We’re way behind where we need to be now,” said Langevin. “This is equivalent in my mind to before September 11 … we were awakened to the threat on the morning after September 11.”

Mock War Game Findings Similar to CSIS Report

The mock cyber attack follows the December 8 release of the CSIS Cybersecurity Commission report, Securing Cyberspace for the 44th Presidency which found that America’s failure to protect cyberspace is one of the most urgent national security problems facing the new administration.

The report claims that there has been immense damage to the national interest, citing major intrusions to various government departments during 2007 alone:

7 questions for Tony O’Neill

Tonyoneill

On the one hand, Tony O’Neill lived a charmed life. The British-born musician — who performed in Kenickie and Brian Jonestown Massacre — had a place in Hollywood and a generous levitra girlfriend with a convertible. They had lots of fun.

On the other hand, there were the drugs. His girlfriend was much older, and, it turned out, siphoning money from her employer to support their habits. Things got pretty bad. When the two of them left for England, they were desperate.

This is the beginning of “Down and Out on Murder Mile,” Tony O’Neill’s somewhat fictionalized account of the drudgery of drug addiction, written with a raw (but guilt-free) clarity.

jacket copy: after a brief halcyon days of rolling around l.a. in an “egg-shell improper ’80s mercedes with the crown rolled down, blasting punk rattle,” things go downhill. you and your girlfriend are addicted to heroin, living in squalor, entirely broke. you’re brutally honest about how debased things were — but how they got that way is more of a mystery. how much of that period is a obscurity to you?

Tony O’Neill: Well it was quite obvious to me that things were not going to end well. I had a really big heroin and cocaine habit, and we were so engrossed in getting high that we barely had time to do anything else. Our days revolved around getting money, getting drugs and getting high. Money was just frittering away, and although we were both making money -? at the start -? soon we weren’t able to keep the money coming in, and thousands were going out every week. When I was in rehab, the doctors and the headshrinkers and the caseworkers would all ask me the same thing. “Why?” You know, “Why did you use?” That’s one of the great failings of AA and the 12 steps. Everybody has to have a reason. “My mommy didn’t love me enough!” “My uncle molested me!” “My pet cat died when I was 7!” They dug and dug. They’d say things like “Maybe you’ve forgotten the trauma. Maybe you have post traumatic stress disorder!” I mean, all of this NONSENSE. The truth was — I told them this then, and they couldn’t get their heads around it — the truth was I used so many drugs because they felt GREAT. That’s why I did it. Despite all of the hardships I had to put up with, all of the terrible things that happened because I was strung out, once I had a needle full of strong Mexican heroin in my veins I felt GREAT, and it was all worth it then.

jc: were you writing all along? or is writing something you’ve done since getting off heroin?to: heroin is a very much tough mistress, and while i was using i didn’t have much on the dot in the interest anything else. i wrote some poems that appeared in my book “songs from the shooting gallery” but it really wasn’t until i was detoxing that i was able to sit down and write in any kind of sustained means. i wrote my first book literally while detoxing from methadone with a trash can to vomit into next to the computer. i had to have some separation from that world in the forefront i could write about it with any real clarity. i was very lucky in that my wife supported me throughout my detox, and encouraged me keep going, to keep writing. belles-lettres really saved my normality, and that’s not an exaggeration. if i didn’t have something imaginative to fill that void that the heroin fist, then i would pull someone’s leg gone ape.

What it took to get kicked out of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, after the jump.

Ilaria

jc: you were living in l.a. and playing in the brian jonestown massacre. how exactly did you part ways? they aren’t known for being the most strait-laced group of guys.to: i was in the party sometime in 2000. my memories of that period are a little viagra online kaufen hazy. i was injecting a a quantity of cocaine, and a kismet of heroin at that point. well, i estimate it’s no secret that everybody was using a lot of drugs, and i was one of the many musicians who passed auspices of their ranks when then band was at a pretty unstable and chaotic call attention to in its narrative. i think the final fight was over a carton of orange juice, and i do remember that i — and the drummer — had a sword swung at us. that said, you know anton is one of the greatest songwriters antiquated there. he’s incredibly gifted and prolific, and utterly unlike most rock ‘n’ guys are at this very moment. i mean, the music determination is so dull hesitation now. everybody acts comparable to little accountants or something. sure, vapid, unexciting…. so it was great to situation with someone who definitely lived it, and meant it, and wasn’t afraid to put themselves out on the edge. that’s what art is …
