Help save homemade toys, handmade kids clothes, and above all, tons of small businesses Zanaflex online from the wrath of the CPSCIA

Bamboletta3 Mamas, I desperately need your help.

As we all know, lead and toxic chemicals do not belong in our children’s toys. Congress, fortunately, acted quickly to fix that problem. Unfortunately, they did so by passing the Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act which threatens to destroy small businesses with prohibitively expensive testing and labeling requirements. In other words, the small artists, toymakers, and WAHM crafters–you know, the people who already make products that we love and trust–are going to go under while the big honkin’ toy companies can continue making their plastic crap in China. You can read all about it here. If you are okay with legalese.

Say goodbye to the beautiful carved wooden toys you find at craft fairs or on etsy, the homemade baby slippers knit by a mom trying to support her family while she stays home with her kids, the cute handmade bows that your neighbor is selling to raise some spending money.

All the details are at Cool Mom Picks as well as on Mom-101 today (where I explain why I take this all so very personally). All you have to do is one or more of the following:

-Find your congress person and senators and write a letter like the sample here, particularly if they serve on the consumer protection subcommittee.

-Send a letter directly to the CPSC.

-Join the stromectol online Handmade Toy Alliance and check out their proposed changes to the act many of which make a whole lot of sense.

-Spread the word to everyone you know who cares about helping the little guy, particular in today’s economy.

I don’t know about you but I love finding dolls for my girls made with love and not lead paint. I love sending them off to play on hand-carved wooden ride-on toys with no batteries, so that they might actually say CHOO CHOO! by themselves and not wait for a voice chip to do it for them. I will be heartbroken if our country’s cottage industries are destroyed when a few simple legislative changes could save them.

If the moms of the world can put our voices together and get one bad Motrin ad pulled, then certainly we can take on this.

Liz Gumbinner is the author of Mom101 and the co-founder and editor of the shopping blog Cool Mom Picks which is fiercely devoted to supporting small business and the handmade community.

Big time troubles for Ill. Governor Rod Blagojevich

Another Illinois corruptocrat taken into custody:

WASHINGTON - Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested Tuesday on charges of conspiring to get financial benefits through his authority to appoint a U.S. senator to fill the vacancy left by Barack Obama’s election as president.

According to a federal criminal complaint, Blagojevich also was charged with illegally threatening to withhold state assistance to Tribune Co., the owner of the Chicago Tribune, in the sale of Wrigley Field. In return for state assistance, Blagojevich allegedly wanted members of the paper’s editorial board who had been critical of him fired.

John Harris, the governor’s chief of staff, was also charged, the U.S. Department of Justice said.

Blagojevich, 51, and Harris, 46, both of Chicago, were each charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery.

A 76-page FBI affidavit alleges that Blagojevich was intercepted on court-authorized wiretaps during the last month conspiring to sell or trade for personal gain the state’s U.S. Senate seat.

Federal prosecutors have investigated Blagojevich’s administration for at least three years. The governor has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

The Department of Justice alleges that in exchange for the Senate appointment, Blagojevich discussed obtaining:

-a substantial salary for himself at either a non-profit foundation or an organization affiliated with labor unions; - placing his wife on paid corporate boards where he speculated she might garner as much as $150,000 a year; - promises of campaign funds ? including cash up front; a cabinet post or ambassadorship for himself.

Mourners clash with police at shot teen’s funeral

“The breadth of corruption laid out in these charges is staggering,” said Patrick J. Fitzgerald, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. “They allege that Blagojevich put a ‘for sale’ sign on the naming of a United States Senator. The citizens of Illinois deserve public officials who act solely in the public’s interest, without putting a price tag on government appointments, contracts and decisions.”

The full indictment can be read here.

Merry Fitzmas, Barry Oh. On top of the econ crisis you’re trying to get a handle on, now you have the distraction of questions about your governor - and your association with him (and kind words about him) - to deal with. More importantly, it will also bring back to light discussions about the Chi-town political machine that greatly aided your rise to prominence and power.

Let me guess what we’ll hear from Obama spox today: This is not the Gov. Blagojevich that President-elect Obama once knew.

Don Surber quips:

The Chicago machine rolls on. These are our moral and intellectual superiors, kiddies.

Heh.

Moroccan convicted of Madrid link

5 12 2008

A Moroccan man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for links to the group that carried out the 2004 Madrid bombings, killing 191 people.

Hicham Ahmidan was convicted for what the prosecution called providing logistical support to the bombers.

Mr Ahmidan’s fingerprints were found in cars used by the bombers, who included his cousin.

The prosecution had initially asked for a 20-year sentence. Mr Ahmidan’s lawyer, Ali Ammar, has filed an appeal.

He said Mr Ahmidan has already been found not guilty of belonging to a terrorist group, and should not be tried twice for the same offence.

Mr Ammar also said his client was unaware of what his cousin and the other bombers were planning.

Mr Ahmidan was in Morocco when the bombs went off in Madrid.

He is currently serving a five-year sentence for international drugs trafficking.

The trial of another Moroccan allegedly linked to the Madrid bombings, Abdellilah Ahriz, was postponed for two weeks.

Many of those who have been convicted for the bombings were Moroccan, a fact which hardened attitudes in Spain towards its southern neighbour.

It also lead to increased co-operation between the Moroccan and Spanish counter-terrorism forces.

The Madrid bombing - in which 10 rucksack bombs tore through four packed commuter trains on 11 March 2004 - was Europe’s most deadly terror attack since the 1988 Lockerbie bombing.
