No Heroics Plays Superheroes for Laughs

Noheroics

The creator of ITV’s new superhero comedy series No Heroics insists he lacks the superpower needed to align the stars in his favor.

Yet Drew Pearce’s six-episode exploration of real-world superheroes who battle very human ennui arrived on U.K. screens this summer just as The Dark Knight was setting new box office records and the late Heath Ledger and comeback player of the year Robert Downey Jr. were making superhero roles safe for Academy Award chatter.

It was all just a happy coincidence for Pearce, the writer/show-runner of previous U.K. shows Lip Service and Damage Control.

“I’ve been a longtime comics nerd, and this is an idea I’ve looked forward to doing for a long time now,” Pearce told Wired.com from London. “I had no way of knowing [No Heroics] would come to TV while The Dark Knight was becoming The Godfather: Part II of superhero movies.”

No Heroics (trailer embedded) features a collection of super-powered neurotics battling life in the everyday world. Marked by the same dry, existential humor that drove The Office (with enough of the surreal playfulness of Spaced), there should be enough laughs in each episode for nerds and non-geeks alike.

Nicholas Burns plays The Hotness, a Human Torch wannabe desperate for the fame and fortune he thinks he deserves. Rebekah Staton portrays She-Force — the marriage-crazed, third-strongest woman in the world. James Lance is Timebomb, a self-destructive dysfunctional who can see 60 seconds into his ever-bleak future. And Patrick Baladi rips it up as Excelsior, the ultra-powerful Superman-style hero of the group who allowed his powers to turn him into a raging jackass.

“We were so lucky to get this cast,” Pearce said. “And I think we’re only scratching the surface of these characters so far.”

Baladi is best known to U.S. TV viewers as Neil Godwin, the Ricky Gervais-cast interloper who muscles in on David Brent’s turf on the second season of the U.K. version of The Office. His Excelsior (below) is a bleak treat that Pearce uses sparingly because of his overwhelming rottenness.

“Writing Excelsior is so much fun because I myself can’t believe what comes out of his mouth,” Pearce said.

As for his own nerd credentials, Pearce is a comics devotee with knowledge of Marvel and DC Comics traditions stretching back decades. But, viewers don’t have to be hard-core comic book geeks to enjoy No Heroics‘ six-episode run. The show’s dubious heroes are flawed people first and trading card stars a distant second.

Noheroicsexcelsor340c69feb0bc401e9aThe meager six-episode story arc is commonplace in cash-strapped British TV comedy, whether a show is on a BBC network or ITV. While Pearce considered producing just six episodes a blessing at first, the short run became a disappointment as it wrapped.

“Starting out on a new series — writing, producing, casting — makes six episodes seem like so much work,” Pearce said. “But when we finished those six, I realized we were just getting started with these characters and their stories.”

Pearce, his cast and crew are waiting to hear whether they will be back for a second series of No Heroics. The show is pulling down strong reviews and ratings overseas — generating enough buzz to make another run likely. Meanwhile, Pearce travels back and forth from London to Los Angeles as talks continue on whether No Heroics will get a shot on U.S. TV. Pearce hinted that all signs point up, up and away, but he honored the entertainment industry’s long-standing tradition of maintaining silence until the deal is done. You never want to jinx anything.

For now, American viewers are finding No Heroics episodes on the usual suspects of dastardly and disreputable online sites.

India-US in last nuclear push

Friday, 26. September 2008 von criminaljusticedegreeonline

Indian PM Manmohan Singh is due to meet US President George Bush amid frantic efforts to win US Congressional support for the two countries’ nuclear deal.

The controversial accord needs to be pushed through Congress before lawmakers conclude this year’s session to campaign for November’s elections.

Correspondents say its ratification will be a complicated process.

US officials hope Congress will approve the deal before the leaders meet later on Thursday in Washington, reports say.

Congress is due to go into recess at the end of this week.

Time running out

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the bill on Tuesday, but there are still several steps to be taken before it can be passed and signed.

The bill has not so far been presented on the floor of the Senate or the House of Representatives.

Last-minute attempts to ratify the bill have been made more complicated because it was presented late to Congress, which is also debating a critical $700bn bank bailout plan, in addition to numerous other important measures before it shuts down for the year.

Correspondents say that the Bush administration needs the help of the Democrats - who control both houses of Congress - to over-ride a law that says Congress must wait 30 working days after receiving a bill before it can ratify it.

The House and the Senate must pass and send identical bills to President Bush for the deal to go through before a new administration takes office in January.

The Bush administration submitted the deal to Congress on 10 September, but that did not leave enough time for its ratification before the election break without a change in the law.

Saggy clothes

Correspondents say it will be a race against time if Prime Minister Singh and President Bush sign the deal - first agreed three years ago - and regarded as a key foreign policy priority for both the Indian and US governments.

Precedent

American lawmakers are now reported to be looking at “all options” to get Congressional approval for the accord, perhaps as part of another bill.

Earlier this month, the Nuclear Suppliers Group lifted a ban that had stopped India from getting access to the global nuclear market.

India says the deal with the US is vital for it to meet its civil energy demands.

But critics say it creates a dangerous precedent - effectively allowing India to expand its nuclear power industry without requiring it to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as other nations must.

They say the deal would undermine the arguments for isolating Iran over its nuclear programme and be a disaster for international non-proliferation efforts.

The agreement is the centrepiece of US efforts to bolster ties with India.

The US restricted nuclear co-operation with India after it tested a nuclear weapon in 1974.

is racism dead?

An Afternoon Comment Diversion / Dustin Rowles

Today’s diversion is more along the lines of a Question of the Day. An issue-oriented diversion, if you will. I was watching “Real Time with Bill Maher” the other night, and will.i.am said something that I found interesting. In the context of a recent poll the AP conducted — which revealed that one-third of Democrats have a deeply negative view of African Americans — he said that, for people under the age of 40, racism doesn’t really exist anymore, that it’s something the younger generations read about in history books but don’t experience.

Debate commission says McCain-Obama faceoff still on

Never mind all of today’s hoopla — Friday’s first presidential debate between John McCain and Barack Obama is full-steam ahead.

Per the just-released statement by the Commission on Presidential Debates, which organizes the meetings between nominees:

The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) is moving forward with its plan for the first presidential debate at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss. this Friday, September 26. The plans for this forum have been underway for more than a year and a half. The CPD’s mission is to provide a forum in which the American public has an opportunity to hear the leading candidates for the president of the United States debate the critical issues facing the nation. We believe the public will be well served by having all of the debates go forward as scheduled.

Palin wine

Earlier today, McCain announced that he is halting his campaign because of the nation’s economic turmoil and the fragility of the proposed financial firm bailout proposal, and called for the debate to be postponed. Obama called for it to go on. Then politicians in both camps weighed in, with — surprise, surprise — Newt Gingrich and Arnold Schwarzenegger backing McCain’s plan, and Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid supporting Obama’s position. Who says politics isn’t predictable?

Clay Shirky and The Heart of Darkness - Copyright and Here Comes Everybody

I???ve seen a load of good reviews for Clay Shirky???s Here Comes Everybody published earlier this year and I have to confess I haven???t yet got around to reading it (spare review copy anyone?).

However, by far the best review I???ve read came to my attention this week in the journal Metamute (???culture and politics after the Net???).

The first half of Felix Strader???s review follows the well-worn path trodden by other reviewers. It outlines Shirky???s basic premise and uses a couple of his case studies to illustrate these points.

But it is the second half of the review where Strader really reveals the gaping hole at the heart of the book:

???For a book that claims to analyse a revolution that ???cannot be contained in the institutional structure of society???. we get extremely little on politics or power. [???] This lack of depth is the result of the single most problematic aspect of the book. It focuses almost exclusively on aspects that are entirely uncontroversial.???

Stalder uses this gaping void to explore what he calls the ???tension??? at the heart of web 2.0. This tension exists between the growing number of decentralized ???amateurs??? creating and contributing value and content to the network and the spaces in which this creation unfolds which are largely centralized and possess vested interests in maintaining control over the public spaces online.

This has a number of clear implications that Stalder believes Shirky must be aware of but keeps quiet about; perhaps given his role as a consultant to the same companies.

As a result, the book???s one glaring omission is about the battle over copyright and DRM:

???Tussle over copyright? Reading Shirky, you wouldn’t know there is one. This is probably the most glaring absence. Number of entries for copyright in the index of the book? Zero! In my view, this is inexcusable because it cuts right to the core of why ‘boring technologies’ are currently so ???socially interesting???. File sharing, in particular, demonstrates most clearly the power of ???organizing without organization??? so radical that, for the moment, nobody knows how to contain it within current institutional structures. Number of entries on P2P or file sharing in the index? Again, zero!???

Heroes time

This omission is a monumental failure on Shirky???s behalf and ???an indication???- to Stalder at least ??? ???of how constrained discourse has become, particularly in the US.??? Damningly, Stalder concludes that this narrow view of the power and potential of Web 2.0 is ???Self-censorship at work.???

While this makes total sense, I can???t offer a critique as I haven???t read Shirky???s book. Rest assured it???s an issue I want to return to once I have.

Obama mocks McCain’s call to fire SEC chairman (AP)

Friday, 19. September 2008 von criminaljusticedegreeonline

ESPANOLA, N.M. - Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama promised fresh ideas Thursday to calm America’s financial meltdown and help struggling families avoid mortgage foreclosure, saying “this is not a time for fear, it’s not a time for panic.”

Obama also heaped criticism and sarcasm on Republican rival John McCain and mocked his promise to fire the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission if elected.

“I think that’s all fine and good but here’s what I think,” Obama said. “In the next 47 days you can fire the whole trickle-down, on-your-own, look-the-other way crowd in Washington who has led us down this disastrous path.

“Don’t just get rid of one guy. Get rid of this administration,” he said. “Get rid of this philosophy. Get rid of the do-nothing approach to our economic problem and put somebody in there who’s going to fight for you.”

Obama came up with yet another way to poke fun at McCain for his comment Monday that the fundamentals of the economy were strong. “This comment was so out of touch that even George Bush’s White House couldn’t agree with it when they were asked about it. They had to distance themselves from John McCain.”

President Bush has used the same language many times but his press secretary would not repeat the line Wednesday in the face of historic financial turbulence.

With the economy rocketing to the front of the campaign agenda, Obama said he would unveil new proposals Friday in Florida. Senior members of his economic team were flying to Miami to meet with Obama before his announcement.

Obama also had telephone discussions Thursday about the financial markets with Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former Fed chief Paul Volcker and former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers.
