Tonight’s Obama Infomercial

tonight, senator obama takes to the airwaves with an infomercial regarding his campaign. this is where he will make his closing argument directly to the american people. the late deciders, particularly women and independent voters.politico writes that some say the infomercial could backfire, while others - such as myself - say it can only help. because while a hillary clinton televised community amphitheatre earlier this year was viewed by straight under a million people, the last presidential nominee to buy 30-minute infomercials received an audience of 26 million viewers.that was in 1992, when ross perot took to the airwaves to re-insert himself into the presidential dog-races. the frame of the infomercials were all the unmodified: perot in his office, with a series of flip charts outlining the nation’s problems and his proposed solutions. this plain-spoken series was the most impressive aspect of an otherwise quirky campaign, and it vaulted him from solitary digits in the polls to an eventual 19% split of the everyday choose.audibly, obama does not be experiencing the same basic to introduce himself to the people in a aspect that ross perot did 16 years ago. though he can only benefit from having the undivided attention of a national viewership days before an election which force present a monumental shift in our nation’s future.this infomercial last wishes as allow senator obama to cut through the negative ads, the attack robo calls, and offer more than just a 2-minute design to people during commercial breaks.it’s also reminiscent of fdr’s “fireside chats” that we’ve read about in history books. it’s good to know that a bossman isn’t universal to gap until a time of crisis to wavelength with the people.i be versed you are all watching tonight - and i hope you’ll encourage your republican and undecided friends to do the very.

Pixolu Finds Images By Similarity

Web-based application Pixolu helps you find images by their download action movies similarity to each other. Enter a search term and Pixolu searches the image indexes of Google, Yahoo, and Flickr. Once Pixolu returns results, you can further refine them by dragging images to a holding area on the lower right corner of the interface. In my test run, I searched for pumpkins. I specifically wanted pictures drama movies of lots of pumpkins gathered together but not pictures of Jack o’ Lanterns or pumpkin pie. By dragging and dropping pictures of multiple pumpkins from my initial search into the sidebar and refining the search, Pixolu narrowed down the remaining images into just those of tons of pumpkins clustered together.

She’s Tight, She’s Ahead of Her Time

There are six days left until the election. Tomorrow, Barack Obama tries to own the headlines with a 30-minute 8 p.m. ad/address/fireside chat/colon cleansing commercial. (We don’t know what’s in it yet.) We don’t know what happens on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, but we know that they’re the last days we have to listen to Obama and McCain before we spend four (or eight!) years listening to just one of them.Marc Ambinder sums up the current McCain message—He can still win!—and provides some contrary evidence. I’ll simply note again that this stuff happens every year. From November 2, 1988, in the Boston Globe:

Dukakis, accompanied by daughter Andrea yesterday because his wife is holed up in a Minneapolis hotel with the flu, delivered a highly charged speech at San Jose State.Mixing his sensory metaphors, Dukakis said, “There’s a feeling in the air and it smells like victory to me.”

From October 28, 1992, in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer:

the cnn-usa today sample of 1,217 odds-on voters showed clinton at 40 percent, bush at 38 percent and perot at 16 percent. with a line of error plus or minus 3 percentage points, that added up to a dead heat. … bush was greeted by thousands of people at a rally in strongsville, not far off cleveland.”you know what’s occurrence?” bush asked. “these guys feel it slipping away from them. they know we’re on the move. they know we’re prevailing impudent. i feel stark for them.”

There’s not an infinite supply of this stuff, but it’s close. Really, only once in a generation (1984, 1972, 1964, 1936) do you have an election where the losing party doesn’t bother claiming that it can still win this thing.

POLYGLOT EPIGRAPHS.

MMcM’s Polyglot Vegetarian, which is consistently both nutritious and delicious, has a post presenting all the epigraphs to Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner’s The Gilded Age, of which the authors wrote: “Our quotations are set in a vast number of tongues; this is done for the reason that very few foreign nations among whom the book will circulate can read in any language but their own; whereas we do not write for a particular class or sect or nation, but to take in the whole world.” MMcM says, “I thought it would be fun to actually transcribe these mottoes, which appear at the head of each chapter, into LT. And, since so many 19th century books have been digitized, it is easy to find many of the sources and check them.” Now, that’s my kind of fun! This is the kind of thing that might have occurred to me to do if I were reading the novel (which I now, of course, want to do), but I would probably not have had the patience to actually follow through—there are a lot of chapters, and many have more than one epigraph. (I add, with awe and reverence, that when MMcM couldn’t find a quoted text online, if at all possible he got the source from the library and scanned the relevant page.) Just about every obvious language is represented, plus all sorts of unexpected ones (Quich

Readable And Page-Turning?

Alison Flood writes in The Guardian that this years Booker Prize judges have described the books on the shortlist as “intensely readable” and “page-turning”, but junta doesn’t think so.

This year the lifetime [sales] figures for the six shortlisted titles are 32,342 - less than this year’s edition of the Guinness World Records achieved in a week.

Apple

[Linda] Grant’s “The Clothes on their Backs”, about a young woman’s fascination with the black sheep of her family, has sold 3,074 copies in the four weeks since the shortlist announcement, according to book sales monitor Nielsen BookScan - considerably more than second placed Aravind Adiga, whose “The White Tiger” has racked up 2,588 sales since the announcement on September 9.

These are stunningly low figures, and I’m quite taken aback. Clearly the prize doesn’t cast quite the aura it once used to. It will be awarded sometime today, and I hope whoever wins is rewarded by a massive rise in sales. Otherwise what’s the point?
