Largehearted Boy’s Interesting CD Releases This Week

scotland’s glasvegas finally releases its self-titled appear album stateside tomorrow after garnering vogue reviews in the uk. the album appeared on may “best of 2008″ music lists, and seems unavoidable to be in the driver’s seat 2009’s lists as well (editor’s note: i am personally not in love with the album. are you?).

My shopping list is pretty short, dominated by the vinyl editions of Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion, Hacienda’s Loud Is the Night, and Starflyer 59’s Dial M.

The Gourds’ Haymaker! is the lone other new disc I have heard that I can recommend from this week’s music releases, along with the reissue of Chatham County Line’s debut self-titled album.

Belgium’s king has appointed a new prime minister and sworn in his cabinet, after a deal was reached on the formation of a new government.

Herman Van Rompuy, leader of the Flemish Christian Democrats, becomes prime minister, succeeding Yves Leterme, who resigned on 19 December.

His government collapsed amid a scandal over the rescue of Fortis bank.

Mr Van Rompuy, formerly speaker of parliament, is seen as a much safer pair of hands, correspondents say.

The new government was presented to King Albert on Tuesday evening.

It comprises the same five parties that had made up Mr Leterme’s government.

Its immediate task is to tackle the recession looming in Belgium, says the BBC’s Oana Lungescu in Brussels, as well as dealing with the scandal that accounted for his predecessor, and with Belgium’s perennial divisions.

Mr Van Rompuy, 61, has long resisted taking the premiership, but is seen as a safe pair of hands, after successfully cracking down on public debt as budget minister in the 1990s.

Mr Leterme quit amid allegations about political meddling in the bail-out of stricken bank Fortis.

He only took office in March, nine months after a general election had resulted in political deadlock amid tensions between the country’s two main communities, the Dutch-speaking Flemish and French-speaking Walloons.

Mr Leterme had tendered his resignation in June after failing to push through plans to devolve more power to the regions - but the king rejected it.

The Fortis scandal was a fresh blow to his government.

The bank was one of those hardest hit by the credit crunch, leaving it desperately short of cash.

The governments of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg decided to take it over and break it up.

Belgium planned to sell nearly all the company’s assets to France’s BNP Paribas.

However, hundreds of thousands of investors were left with virtually nothing and so began legal action.

The Brussels appeal court ruled in their favour, freezing the sale.

But Belgium’s Supreme Court president said there were “undoubtedly significant indications” that members of the Belgian government had attempted to influence the outcome of the court case. That piled pressure on the government, triggering the prime minister’s resignation.

Mr Van Rompuy is an old-style Belgian politician, favouring compromise over confrontation, but he will need all his skills of negotiation to keep this new government together beyond next year’s regional elections, our correspondent says.

(CNN) — Questions continued to swirl Thursday over the president’s decision to withdraw a pardon for a New York developer involved in a Long Island mortgage fraud scheme.

President Bush withdrew the pardon of Isaac Toussie after a firestorm of criticism.

Isaac Toussie, 36, was convicted in 2001 of mail fraud and of making false statements to the Department of Housing and Urban Development that stemmed from the mortgage scheme.

The White House initially announced the pardon Tuesday afternoon, immediately setting off a firestorm of criticism from angry homeowners and investors, as well as government watchdog organizations quick to note Toussie’s ties to prominent Republican officeholders.

Among the questions now being asked are:

• Why didn’t the White House conduct a more thorough investigation of Toussie’s background?

• Why did White House Counsel Fred Fielding circumvent the typical pardon application process by directly considering Toussie’s clemency request instead of leaving it to the Justice Department?

• Did Toussie get special treatment because of his political connections?

Toussie and his father, also a developer, are defendants in a lawsuit filed in New York federal court on behalf of more than 400 minority home purchasers who allege a conspiracy involving racial steering, racketeering and fraud related to homes the Toussies built on Staten Island, attorney Peter Seidman told CNN.

Seidman, a partner in a law firm representing the plaintiffs, said he was "very pleased" with President Bush’s order for a review of the pardon.

"It [the pardon] was a bitter pill for the home purchasers to swallow," he said.

The Toussies had previously been accused of conspiring with lenders and others to build and sell substandard homes — a charge they denied.

According to a senior administration official, the White House learned new information about Toussie’s case Tuesday night — hours after the pardon was announced.

Specifically, the White House learned, according to the official, "additional information about the nature of fraud [Toussie] carried out." The White House also learned that Toussie’s father had made numerous contributions to leading GOP politicians.

In 2008, Toussie’s father donated almost $40,000 to Arizona Sen. John McCain, Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman, Oregon Sen. Gordon Smith and Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor.

White House press secretary Dana Perino issued a statement Wednesday saying that "based on information that has subsequently come to light," Bush had told the Justice Department’s pardon attorney not to act on the pardon extended to Toussie.

Instead, Perino said, "The president believes that the pardon attorney should have an opportunity to review this case before a decision on clemency is made."

While almost all pardon requests go through the Justice Department, the Constitution allows the president to grant a pardon or commutation to any individual for any reason.
